[Challenge] Blame Work for this
You may blame my co-workers, all of whom adore slash, reading, writing, and firmly believe that all things Pretty Boy and wonderful are better after being slashed.
The challenge: Pick 5 fics you've read in the last week that are not in a fandom you've recently written/drawn/created-works-of-anything-for. Post them, and tell us why you did so, and why the rest of us have to now go read these.
1. My first pic is a series actually. It's called Drastically Redefining Protocol by rageprufrock and is Au of the Merlin BBC series. This needs to be read even if you don't like the Merlin series. Or haven't even heard of it. The characterizations are true and wonderful to all the major characters. The situation even somewhat believable, and yes, the smut is hot. The story however is the real gem here. It's written with care and with a sense that rageprufrock wants the reader to really laugh, and cry a bit along with everyone.
In the interest of not getting fruit thrown at me tomorrow I won't cheat and use rageprufrock's stories as all five. Suffice to say - read the Naruto stories. You'll laugh so hard your stomach will ache. Her 'Homemaking' (a Sherlock BBC fic) is one I keep bookmarked and one I re-read reguarly. I don't even re-read most of the books I buy. Read the NCIS and SGA stories too. rageprufrock has a really great sense of humor and it shows. You won't regret it.

2. Second on my list is a Star Trek reboot AU series by waldorf called Illogical (√π233/hy7). The summary for this series is short and sweet; Jim Kirk never takes Pike up on his dare to do better. This ladies and gents and asorated other beings is Star Trek done Good Will Hunting. This series made me grin, giggle, swear and want to declare my love for the author. Jim Kirk is perfectly brilliant in this, snarky and still oh-so-human. In fact all the characters in this series are so human it nearly makes your heart break. No one is infallible, and Waldorf shows you this. Waldorf doesn't just show you it, but invites you in to play in the various character's minds as they go about their careening crazy ways and it's glorious. Another story I have bookmarked and will re-read on lazy days or on days I just need to read something with a little heart and some tnt. And the very best part of it? Some kind soul has made this into a pod-fic.

3. And now for something completely different. I use to read Naruto fiction. While I don't so much anymore, I do fondly reccomend Chibirisuchan's Side Effects. As a warning, this isn't finished. It likely never will. I seriously don't care because never before have I read an Mpreg which was logical, kept the main characters in character and still made me laugh like a hyena. I can't really say much about it for fears of spoiling, but suffice to say: Kakashi is perfectly border-line sociopath and Iruka a wonderful teacher. Naruto is done really well here, and the team dynamic between Team 7 (OT3some!) makes you laugh. You won't regret reading what appears to be an permanent WIP.

4. Next is a Harry Potter WIP that again, seems to be forgotten. The Mirror of Maybe is by Midnight Blue and is one of the few Harry Potter fics I'll ever admit to reading without promptly denying it. There is some gorgeous art work to accompany this story by one of my favorite non-Hetalia artists - Lizeth. To make a very long story short, Harry gets pulled into a magic mirror (which is actually a magic math mirror based on alternate realities and predictions.) When he gets spit back out he's got 30 some odd years of memories and he's stuck in his teenager body. This is a slash fic and it's a Harry/Snape fic to boot with some very complicated OCs that support, rather then dominate the story. Harry is well written and the situations are handled wonderfully. Midnight Blue even brings in back-story, plot and a whole bucket load of development without drenching the reader in it.

5. This last one is less of a Fic pimping and more of an Author pimping. The Magic Rat at Ex Libris writes FF7, Lord of the Rings and Metalocolypse fics as well as some truly excellent original writing that has since been removed in preparation for being published. Once I got over my sulk that I couldn't just sit down and read 'em, I realized I'd soon be able to anyways once they were in print. Yes it's Mpreg and the device by which the Mpreg happens is a bit suss. By the Magic Rat writes with a selfless sense of humor and doesn't sy away from an in-your-face-plot. There's twist and turns and it's one of those gems of writing everyone wants to come across. I say start with the LotR stuff, and then read whatever original stuff is left on the site before hitting the other two fandoms up. You won't regret it.
