(Hey, look! Something OTHER then a FACE fic!)

Finland had known, that had he asked his family, they would have been forced to say no.

So, Finland had done his research.

If you wanted to beat an unbeatable foe, if you wanted to wring victory from your enemy's neck and drink it in you needed Prussia.

Prussia took on the cases everyone else had given up on, the ones other nations claimed to be unsalvageable. He'd clawed his way up from being the personification of a mere holy order (albeit one who kicked much dark age arse) to an Empire. With no natural defenses to rely on, Prussia famously relied on the sword-arm of his armies to defend his borders. And what a sword-arm that was! Prussia was a military scholar, a former holy knight turned Imperial soldier and it was his personal pleasure in turning the tide against an over-confident enemy.

Which is why Finland had gone not to his Sve, or even to his fellow Nordics, but to Prussia. Prussia had turned helped to turn Germany into a world power. He'd been responsible for quite literally whipping America into shape - and turned the tide against England. Finland knew he'd needed help, and with no allies of his own he could count on, he'd known he'd have to count on his own people and himself.

Prussia had been amused by Finland's offer.

"Teach me to fight," he'd asked the other nation, before dinner.

The albino hadn't answered, had simply smirked at him. Then, during dinner, he'd leaned over and whispered in Finland's ear, "Why should I?"

During dessert, Finland had whispered back, "You'll be beating Russia."

Prussia hadn't even waited for dinner to be over. "So," he asked, sounding a bit bored. "What am I going to be getting personally?"

That had given Finland pause. He had had little to offer - he would not become part of Prussia's house, no. Nor could he have offered trade agreements, and his military hadn't been anywhere near as trained as Prussia's.

"Well?" Prussia had looked at him over the rim of his wine glass as the dessert plates were cleared away, one eyebrow arched and a smug look on his face.

Finland had made his offer before he could think twice - Sve and his family wouldn't help him, he had to take what he could and use what he had. From the slow smile spreading across the other's face, he'd known he'd made the right one. Hauled out of the ballroom, Prussia spun him against the wall, "You do as I say now." He'd kicked open Finland's legs. "Only what I say, till you earn your freedom."

Sitting still and perfect in the winter's snow Finland glanced down at his highly trained battalion and nodded. He'd spent three years under Prussia. They were as ready as could be - and now was the time to prove he was not the passive little territory everyone thought he was. He was Finland, a land of ice, snow, majestic land and a fiercely proud people. And he was no one's to own.

It was time to put all that sweat and tears to good use. It was time to show the world what he, what THEY could do.

One year later, Prussia grinned at him. "About time," he bellowed over the din of the wild party. "I ought to conquer your ass for being too slow!"

Finland laughed with him. "Just you try," he promised, "just you try."
